AAIS Women’s Studies Caucus Annual Meeting
April 8, 2011; 12-1:15
University of Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh, PA

Minutes

Present at the meeting: Ombretta Frau [President], Cristina Gragnani [Secretary], Carol Lazzaro-Weis, Chiara Fabbian, Claudia Karagoz, Virginia Picchietti, Norman Rusin, Laura Salsini, Monica Seger, Adrienne Ward.

Election of new president: Ombretta Frau finished her tenure as president and Cristina Gragnani has stepped in as the new president. We could not elect a new secretary and thought of doing it via email with all of you involved [NB We ran the election via email. Ombretta Frau served as Acting Secretary for this task only. Chiara Fabbian was elected Secretary on April 28th, 2011].

Ombretta Frau announced Angela Jeannet’s new book on Il grande risveglio. Il movimento delle donne nell’America profonda, Franco Angeli, 2010.

AAIS President Carol Lazzaro-Weis pointed out our difficult financial situation and limited funds, which will probably prevent us from inviting a high profile speaker from overseas for our next conference. We would like to ask you to communicate with Cristina if you find out about women’s studies scholars who will be visiting professors in the East Coast next year. We could invite them to AAIS as plenary speakers while saving money on travel.

Carol also proposed to merge the WSC with the ailing Gay & Lesbian Caucus. The day after, at the AAIS business meeting, we realized that, at least for the time being, it would be better for the two caucuses to remain separate entities. There is an enthusiastic graduate student from CUNY who has plans to revive the G&L Caucus without, however, getting the WSC involved. We agree with her.

AAIS 2012: the conference will take place at the College of Charleston, in South Carolina in April.

AAIS 2013: we will probably meet in Eugene, Oregon. As usual, various ideas emerged on possible collaborations with the Society for Italian Studies (UK) and Canadian Society for Italian Studies.

Respectfully submitted by Ombretta Frau, President
