PUBLICATION
ANNOUCEMENT
The publishing house LEGAS (Toronto/New
York) has just published The
Woman Outlaw, Angela M. Jeannet's
translation of La briganta
by Maria Rosa Cutrufelli.
Orders should
be sent to LEGAS, PO Box 149,
Mineola, NY 11501.
A young woman
of the Sicilian upper-class in
the 1860s makes a tragic gesture
that causes the utter dislocation
of her life, but also fosters
a sort of rebirth. She spends
a few dramatic months hiding in
the mountains as a member of a
band of outlaws. After being caught
and imprisoned she looks back
on the events of her life. The
theme at the core of Margherita’s
story is a woman’s construction
of her own identity. History
and fiction mingle in this novella
that is appropriate reading for
a general public and for students
in History, Italian Studies, and
Women's Studies courses.

REPORT
The Women’s
Studies Caucus collected data
for a report on the presence of
women in Italian studies. Following
is a brief summary of the results
prepared by Giovanna Bellesia,
who collected and elaborated data
regarding undergraduate and graduate
enrollments in North American
institutions.
No. of universities
and colleges contacted : 272
in 42 US States + Canada
No of universities
and colleges for which it was
possible to establish the percentage
of female students: undergraduate
52, graduate 14
No of universities
where female students were over
50%: undergraduate 51,
graduate 12
Overall enrollment
in Italian classes: undergraduate
54,662; graduate 2,706
Overall female
enrollment: undergraduate
31,636; graduate 1,386
Overall percentage
of women students: undergraduate
57.88% , graduate 51.22%
Conclusions: Although,
as expected, women comprise the
majority of our students in undergraduate
institutions (in 51 out of 52
schools) the actual percentage
of female students was not as
high as anticipated. Female presence
was close to 58% . The numbers,
fell in Graduate Schools, where
there is almost an even number
of female and male students. Data
is being collected on the presence
of women faculty. It will be interesting
to compare those data with Graduate
enrollments. This will allow us
to predict possible
changes in the demographics of
Italian faculty members in the
future.

AAIS Member Luigi Fontanella Announces Publication of New Work
Luigi Fontanella ha pubblicato recentemente un importante volume saggistico su letteratura ed emigrazione; titolo del libro: LA PAROLA TRANSFUGA
(Firenze: Cadmo, 2003, pp. 267), ISBN 88-7923-282-7, Euro 20.

Heliotropia: forum for Boccaccio research and Interpretation
Mission Statement
Heliotropia is a peer-reviewed journal that was created to provide a widely and readily available forum for research and interpretation to an international community of Boccaccio scholars. Its role, first and foremost, is to promote and disseminate recent scholarship in a form that is both efficiently accessible and cost-free. Being uninhibited by the conventional constraints of academic publishing, the online journal enjoys the advantages of brief turnaround times, flexibility in the length and nature of submissions and the ability to present a variety of media according to the needs of its authors.
Principal Characteristics
The exegetic scope of the journal is vast. Because our readers' interests are as varied as their approaches to Boccaccio's life and works, all substantial scholarly contributions are considered for publication. Consequently, the journal hosts the entire gamut of interpretive perspectives, from rigorous philological and historical studies to highly theoretical and wide-ranging comparative inquiries. In addition to these contributions Heliotropia provides sections specifically dedicated to book reviews, re-proposals of classic Boccaccio scholarship, brief notices, bibliographies and other items of general interest to the scholarly community.

Tempting Sin, Attempting
Virtue
17-18 October 2003
How have conceptions of
sin and virtue transformed throughout the history of Italian culture?
How have they been variably represented through literary and visual
expression? The aim of this conference is to address these queries
by examining the ways in which notions of good and bad, sinful and
virtuous, and sacred and profane have developed and changed over time.
The conference will focus
primarily on Italian literature and culture, but comparative and interdisciplinary
approaches are strongly encouraged. Topics may encompass other literatures
as well as Art History, History, Film Studies, Philosophy, Music,
Political Science, Religion, Gender Studies or any other relevant
discipline.
Send abstracts of approximately
200 words by April 30th to the:
Conference Steering Committee
Department of Italian
Rutgers University
84 College Avenue
New Brunswick, NJ 08901
Selected papers will be
published in a special issue of La Fusta: Journal of
Italian Literature and Culture. For further information email:

We look forward to your
contribution.

CALL_FOR_PAPERS
Renaissance Society of America 50th Annual Meeting
New York : March 25-27, 2004
A panel/series of panels
will be organized on various representations of the grotesque and
burlesque in the society, literature, and arts of the sixteenth century.
One of the characteristics of the early modern period was the move
towards more rigidly defined political and social identities. Despite
this trend, there still existed numerous cultural and artistic initiatives
that remained contrary, if not actually in opposition, to the prevailing
climate of taste and acceptability.
The proposed panel(s) aim(s)
to assess the importance and extent of these initiatives both within
Italy itself, and in Europe as a whole. Potential topics for papers
might include the following: Theoretical concepts of deformity; Physical
deformity and sixteenth-century medicine; The marginalization and
mockery of deformed individuals in Cinquecento society; Depictions
of the grotesque in art; Burlesque poetry, etc. Papers are invited
from any relevant academic discipline; interdisciplinary topics are
particularly welcomed.
Please send proposals to
D.Zanre@italian.arts.gla.ac.uk,
preferably by Friday May 9th at the latest. Deadline
to submit proposals to the RSA is May 18, 2003.
